That is the question. I'd rather start a pair for myself to replace the very first pair I made about 4 years ago. They are such a versatile blend of muted pastel colors that they seem to go with most everything I own. Weird, because I'm not a pastel sort of girl. I took one of them to my LYS in what I thought would be a vain attempt to match the colorway. Instead, I found a gorgeous yarn of 60% alpaca/20% merino/10% nylon in exactly the same colors!!!
This is such a rare occurrence that I was flabberghasted and delighted in equal measure. So, of course, those are what I'd like to dive into most. Starting bright & early tomorrow. But perhaps they should be saved as reward for finishing something else that's already on the needles. *sigh*
Another pair in the works is a rich purple/blue/green of the same spinner as this pair you see here. I started them for myself while in Vermont. Then someone commented how much he liked them. So I kept knitting and asked for his address. Unfortunately, that pair hit a few 'snags', so to speak.
First: A man's foot is bigger than mine, so the circumference is too small. To make matters worse, I knit them uncharacteristically tight.
Second: I knit the foot with abandon. Before I knew it, they were w a y t o o long.
Third: My original "Plan B" was to skip over to the yarn store where I'd purchased that yarn and get a second skein. They were on the last day of their "Going Out of Business" sale the day I arrived. That put a kink in my tail.
Fourth: Many hours on the internetz uncovered that yarn in London or Germany. The exchange student I know there offered to buy the yarn for me & ship it. This week, he admitted financial difficulties. So, no yarn.
This means I must rip back the first sock entirely and start over in a looser gauge.
AND, that I won't be getting a pair for myself. I can live with that. It's the ripping back that gets me down. I despise wasting all those hours in fruitless labor. Especially when that first sock is perfect for me. Maybe it's time for "Plan C", in which I try to negotiate that German website and buy the yarn myself. Then, I could keep the first good sock, just rip it back to my own foot size and close it up. Followed by knitting a mate to each of those already knit socks and VOILA! Two pairs! I like this plan better.
