I love when the lefse is done. The family will not be deprived of one of the two family traditions that remain for our holiday celebrations. The other is meatballs. Alas, I have not mastered those. Yet.
Our gatherings are not imbued with religious ritual & meaning, nor conducted with grand decor & special outfits. Our holidays are simple, practical and rather brief.
The trappings have become fewer each year since my Grampa died in 1999. Gifts dwindled and then ceased altogether for a couple of years. In all honestly, that was probably necessary as the gifts had gotten out of control and it had become stressful. This year, I am happy to be giving small items, some handmade, some merely something to say "we were thinking of you".
The best part is, I am once again looking forward to Christmas with our families.
And, the lefse will be there, marking the occasion.
